| North Florida Holsteins conducts
a very active and successful International Student Intern Program.
Students, most with a veterinary or 4-year agriculture degree, work at
North Florida Holsteins for a 12 month period. During the first 6
months, students rotate through the following departments - herd health,
hospital barn, calf crew, heifer crew, feed department, milking parlor,
parlor maintenance, parlor office and night springers. The remaining 6
months, students specialize in an area where they have shown the most
interest and ability. Normally, there are 15 international students from
various countries at a time. Students are paid a wage for working at the
farm, and live with other students in one of 4 houses owned by the farm.
|
| This is an outstanding
educational opportunity for those interested in learning the operation
of a successful large dairy, along with hands-on animal husbandry
techniques. The international student intern program provides experience
with a large-herd nutrition program, innovative cattle housing, a
state-of-the-art milking parlor, and in-house veterinary treatments
including surgeries and embryo transfer. Students benefit from the
multi-national perspectives of others participating in the program
through interaction in work, conversations at home and social
activities.
